It is with regret and sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles Allen Burney, Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.
Many British and Iranian archaeologists were trained by him and took part in his excavations in Turkey and Iran. His most important excavations in Iran were conducted in the 1970s at Haftavan Tepe near Lake Urmia in Iranian Azarbaijan, a site dating mainly to the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Charles Burney was a longstanding member of BIPS, and one of the founding members of BANEA, the British Association for Near Eastern Archaeology, in 1988.
BIPS extends its sincere condolences to the Burney family.
