It is with deep regret that we share the passing of our colleague and friend Professor David Morgan. David was educated at Oxford and London, and subsequently held a number of academic posts, most recently as Emeritus Professor in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
For the last few years David also served BIPS as Honorary Vice President. In March, he gave a lecture at the British Academy, ‘How Mongol was the Mongol Empire?’, in which he reevaluated the Mongol legacy in Iran. He was always generous in sharing his knowledge of all things Iranian, from history to Islamic thought, and he was forthright in expressing his opinion at BIPS meetings.
Among his many works, he will be remembered most for Medieval Persia 1040-1797 (London: Longman 1988), and The Mongols (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1986). He edited and co-edited a number of important works including Medieval Historical Writing in the Christian and Islamic Worlds, (London, SOAS, 1982).
We send our deepest sympathies to David’s family.
